SJN’s Local Media Project was launched in 2019, to strengthen and reinvigorate local media ecosystems by catalyzing and supporting sustainable solutions journalism-oriented collaboratives.
The Southwest Michigan Journalism Collaborative is in its third year and has embarked on the second phase of its collaborative reporting work. The collaborative's mission is support and enhance the news ecosystem in Southwest Michigan, to provide accurate and equitable coverage, and to promote diversity of voices among journalists and sources alike.
"With the growing challenges presented by shrinking newsrooms with limited resources, the idea of collaborative efforts in journalism seemed to be the next best step to addressing gaps in local news and ensuring a thriving ecosystem," says Sarah Lee, vice president marketing communications at Kalamazoo Community Foundation, one of the collaborative's 12 partners.
