In 2023, the United Way of Bay County CEO Nicole Luczak asked how
Route Bay City fit into her organization's mission. It's not hard to say how everything the United Way touches is a candidate for a solutions journalism story. The United Way supports nonprofit agencies whose entire mission is solving community issues.
Today,
Route demonstrates its role in fulfilling that mission with a tag, United for Good. The tag appears on a story about once a month. Managing Editor Kathy Roberts meets with Nicole and her team to discuss programs the United Way supports through its impact partners. Together, they create a list of solutions journalism stories that consistently rank among Route's best-read articles.
The first story in the series featured a project that partnered United Way with a local agency, Do-All Inc., to pay the salary of a man with autism hired by a for-profit company. Other stories have focused on efforts to build literacy skills in kids and adults, businesspeople working together to clean up parks in the community, and teen volunteers.
